Month-long World Environment Day 2025 observance concludes

The month long observance of World Environment Day 2025, observed under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally” concluded today at City Convention Centre with a call for shared responsibility to address plastic crisis in the state.
Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary of Forest, Environment and Climate Change attending the programme as Chief Guest, said while there are many laws and provisions to protect the environment, their effectiveness depend on public compliance.
“Despite authorities’ efforts to ban single use plastics, change is impossible without public participation,” Arun Kumar Sinha said. “Most of the irresponsible disposed plastic ends up in Loktak Lake. Protecting this heritage site demands immediate and sustained action against plastic waste.”
T. Brajakumar Singh, Director of Environment and Climate Change said, “The ban on plastic use may not be feasible as it’s everywhere, but reducing plastic pollution through mindful consumption, use of biodegradable alternatives and behavioral change is necessary and achievable.”
The campaign, led by Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, had a series of events and awareness drives across different sectors of the society to strengthen public awareness on plastic pollution. The concluding day began with a cyclothon from THAU Ground to City Convention Centre where the valedictory function was held.
Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the competitions.
