A solemn memorial service was held today at Ningthoukhong Bazar Community Hall in Bishnupur district in remembrance of three youths—Gurumayum Bonny Sharma, Meisnam Malemnganba, and Pukhrambam Avinash—who have been missing since June 6, 2023.
The three young men reportedly went missing after leaving their homes amid the ethnic unrest that followed the May 3 violence in Manipur. It is suspected that the youths may have gone missing while travelling towards the Churachandpur side and were allegedly captured by Kuki militant groups in the aftermath of the violence that saw Meitei-inhabited areas in Churachandpur and adjoining hill districts come under attack.
Families of the missing youths, who have been living in uncertainty for a year, believe the three may have been killed, although no official confirmation has been received. Despite repeated appeals and efforts, no credible information has surfaced regarding their whereabouts. A similar memorial event was held on August 2 last year, as the families expressed anguish over the lack of answers and justice.
Addressing the gathering, Ningthoukhong Apunba Women Wing President R.K. Ongbi Tombisana Devi said the continued silence from authorities has only deepened the pain of the families. She called on the government to take immediate steps to uncover the truth and deliver justice to the families who continue to suffer in the absence of closure.
