May Day in Manipur: A call for unity amidst labour struggles and external aggression on Manipur- MIYC

IT News
Imphal, April 29:

On the occasion of May Day, the Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) issued a statement emphasizing the significance of the day for the working class and marginalised communities. The statement highlighted that May Day serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by labourers and the need for unity among all the indigenous communities to address systemic issues.
The MIYC recalled the historical origins of May Day, tracing it back to the 1886 labour movement in Chicago, USA, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday. The movement led to significant sacrifices, including the loss of lives, but ultimately contributed to the recognition of workers’ rights. The MIYC drew parallels between these historical events and the current challenges faced by workers in Manipur after the external aggression on Manipur on May 3, 2023.
Statement expressed concern over the ongoing conflict in Manipur, which escalated on May 3, 2023. The MIYC noted that the violence has led to widespread displacement, loss of livelihoods, and economic instability. Many businesses, entrepreneurs, and small-scale industries have been severely affected, with shops and markets in areas like Thangal Bazar and Paona Bazar being closed due to the unrest. Farmers have also suffered, with agricultural activities disrupted and lands lying fallow.
The MIYC criticised the prevailing corruption, favouritism, and nepotism in the system, which have hindered the progress of educated and skilled youth. The organisation emphasised the need for structural reforms to address these issues and to create opportunities for the younger generation.
Furthermore, the MIYC highlighted the importance of land and resources for the indigenous communities in Manipur. The statement pointed out that the current crisis has aggravated existing inequalities and called for collective efforts to protect the rights and livelihoods of the local population.
In conclusion, the MIYC urged all indigenous communities to come together in solidarity to address the structural crises facing Manipur. The organisation emphasized that unity and collective action are essential to overcome the challenges and to build a more equitable and just society.
