A massive human chain protest, stretching approximately 7 kilometers from Changangei Uchekon to Kwakeithel along Tiddim Road in Imphal West, was held today to denounce the reported removal of the word “Manipur” from a Manipur State Transport (MST) bus by personnel of the 4th Mahar Regiment. The act has sparked widespread outrage across the state, with protestors alleging a deliberate move to undermine Manipur’s identity and integrity.
The protest was jointly organized by the All Thoubal District United Clubs’ Organisation (ATDDUCO), under the aegis of the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), in coordination with Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, the All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), the Committee on Human Rights (COHR), and the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF). A parallel demonstration was also held at Yairipok with the support of the All Yairipok United Club Organisation (AYUCO), where hundreds of people, including local clubs and Meira Paibi groups, formed a human chain while chanting slogans like “Save Manipur” and “Condemn India’s Policy to Obliterate Manipur.”
Speakers at the protest accused the Government of India of executing a “divide and rule” strategy to erase the state’s distinct identity. They condemned top state officials—including the DGP, Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, and Governor—for allegedly being complicit in the move and demanded their immediate resignation.
AMUCO General Secretary Leishangthem Pratap reiterated the organization’s firm stand against any policy that threatens the existence of Manipur and warned that protests will intensify if the people’s voices continue to be ignored. He urged the public to remain vigilant and united in defending the state’s integrity through democratic means.
The protest drew participation from a wide cross-section of civil society groups, students, and concerned citizens, reflecting a growing sentiment to resist any perceived attempts to erase Manipur’s name, identity, and political presence.
