A mass tree plantation programme was held at Keirak, Wabagai Cheirao Ching, and the surrounding areas of the Buffalo Farm as part of the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0.” The initiative was organised by Salam Dhanabir Luwang, Member of Keirak, Wabagai Zilla Parishad, under the supervision of the Thoubal Forest Division.
Chief Conservator of Forests, L. Joykumar, who attended the programme, termed the event a major success, especially ahead of the upcoming Van Mahotsav. He noted that the programme was participated by District Administration Kakching, District Police Kakching, local schools, clubs, civil society organisations, and Village Level Federations (VLFs).
He asserted the importance of ensuring the survival of the saplings planted, stating that while tree plantation drives are carried out across the country every year, the real challenge lies in nurturing the trees to maturity. He encouraged everyone to adopt tree planting as a regular habit to preserve forested and green areas.
L. Joykumar also mentioned the ecological significance of Kharungpat, mentioning that it serves as a habitat and feeding ground for many rare and beautiful bird species. He supported the demand by the Zilla Parishad member, CSOs, and local residents to declare the area a bird sanctuary. He added that steps are already being taken by the concerned authorities to officially designate Kharungpat as a Bird Sanctuary.
The programme was also attended by RK Amarjit, Chief Conservator of Forests, Dr. L. Jeeceelee, Divisional Forest Officer Thoubal, Range Officer Deepa from the Headquarters, and other officials from the Forest Department.
