Manipuri film Boong to feature in “Special Focus on Indian Women Filmmakers” at Malaysia International Film Festival

Lakshmipriya Devi’s acclaimed Manipuri-language debut Boong has been selected for screening at the 8th/ Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest), scheduled in Kuala Lumpur from July/ 19 to/ 27, 2025. The film will be showcased in the festival’s “Special Focus on Indian Women Filmmakers” segment, part of its broader spotlight on notable contributions from female directors.
Produced by prominent figures including Farhan Akhtar, Vikesh Bhutani, Ritesh Sidhwani, and Shujaat Saudagar under Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, Boong premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival as part of its Discovery section . The film follows the heartfelt journey of a young Manipuri boy, Boong, on a mission to reunite his family—using his slingshot and schoolyard courage as he navigates themes of friendship, language, and political tension in Manipur.
MIFFest’s 2025 edition, themed “Infinity,” will screen 62 films from 48 countries, featuring tributes to Indian cinema icons like Raj Kapoor, and shining a spotlight on Indian women filmmakers through a carefully curated programme that includes Boong, Second Chance, Village Rockstars 2, and Victoria . The festival will run at MYTown Kuala Lumpur, with the Golden Global Awards ceremony taking place on July/ 26 at Zepp KL.
MIFFest founder Joanne Goh remarked that the festival’s international lineup, which includes several world premieres, promises a rich cinematic experience for local and international audiences alike .
This selection highlights Boong’s growing global recognition and underscores the rising influence of Indian women in international cinema. Lakshmipriya Devi, whose debut offers a poignant and nuanced portrayal of childhood amid socio-political complexities in Manipur, continues to receive acclaim on the global festival circuit.
