Already disturbed Manipur, due to the ongoing crisis for over 6 months, has been once more crippled today with people of the state expressing strong resentment over the assumed inaction of both the center and the state government in finding the two missing teenagers from Manipur.
Two students studying class X student – Maibam Avinash and Ningthoujam Anthony went missing on November 5 and remain untraced till today. JAC formed against the missing of two students called announced 9 hours of bandh the day before yesterday but was extended to 33 hours total bandh after the government gave no response.
As many as 36 people went missing and are still untraceable in the aftermath of the crisis that sparked on May 3 in Churachandpur district and which still continues for over 198 days. With two more teenagers appearing in class X in the coming session, four students have gone missing. There were intense agitations demanding to find the whereabouts of the two students after photos of both appeared on social media depicting them harassed and of course raped and murdered. (Luwangbi Linthoingambi Hijam (17), daughter of Hijam Kullajit and Hijam ongbi Jayalakshmi of Sagolband Tera Tongbram Leikai and Phijam Hemanjit Singh, s/o of Phijam Ibungobi and Phijam ongbi Memcha of Takyel Kolom Leikai, went missing since July 6 and is still not found. People assumed them killed in the most heinous manner.
During this hard time starting from May 3, Manipur didn’t witness such intense uproar when people went missing. But the wrath of the people cannot be concealed when it comes to the missing students.
Today too, almost all people across the valley areas extended support to the 33-hour bandh starting from 1 am today.
During the bandh, Normalcy was severely affected in all valley areas of the state.
Initially, the bandh, which started at 4 am of November 10 was scheduled to conclude on Friday 1 pm.
The two teenagers- hailing from Lamsang Akham Awang Leikai in Imphal West district went missing after they had gone to attend a meeting at Awang Sekmai also under Imphal West district on November 5. Police have recovered the cell phone used by them and two suspects – who are cadres of KRA – a SoO group were arrested but the whereabouts of the two missing teenagers are yet to be found.
In view of the bandh, the Khwamband Keithel, the main market in Imphal including the iconic Nupi Keithel (women’s market), wore a deserted look since early morning while the movement of passenger service vehicles was off the road except for a few private ones.
The commercial areas of Imphal town with shops, banks, and other business establishments also remained closed in view of the shutdown.
Except for a few private vehicles, all the inter-state, inter-district, and inter-localities transport services also suspended their normal service.
The educational institutions around the state capital also remained closed.
So far, there has been no report of any untoward incidents till the filing of this story.
Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence since the first week of May, in which 175 persons were killed and nearly 50,000 people displaced.
