Manipur University hosts Biodiversity Day event focused on Loktak lake conservation

A one-day discourse on biodiversity conservation was organised today at the Inland Water Transport Complex Hall, Sendra, in observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025. The event was hosted by the Department of Zoology, Manipur University, in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Loktak Development Authority, Babina Healthcare and Hospitality Industries Pvt. Ltd., and BeeNet, Manipur.
Held under the United Nations theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”, the event adopted the local slogan “Unwind the Mirror: the Loktak Lake,” focusing on the preservation of Manipur’s iconic freshwater lake.
The event began at 8:00 am with a social service programme along the Sendra Road, followed by the formal discourse starting at 11:00 am. Distinguished figures in environmental conservation, academia, and industry participated in the function. Members of the presidium included Prof. N. Rajmuhon Singh, former Vice-Chancellor of DM University; Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh, Director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change; Ngangom Sanajaoba Meitei, Project Director of Loktak Development Authority; Dr. Th. Dhabali Singh, CMD of Babina Healthcare; and Prof. Th. Binoy Singh, Head of the Zoology Department and Registrar (in-charge) of Manipur University.
The welcome and introductory remarks were delivered by Prof. N. Mohilal Meitei, while S. Bhubon Singh, Secretary of BeeNet Manipur, delivered a key talk on biodiversity conservation in the region.
The programme included speeches from the presidium members, who collectively stressed the urgent need for ecological balance, sustainable resource use, and community participation in preserving biodiversity, particularly around Loktak Lake.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony at 1:00 pm and a vote of thanks by Prof. Ksh. Birla Singh. Boating and birdwatching activities followed, celebrating the ecological richness of the region.
