In an effort to highlight the influential force of cinema, THOUNA Manipur, in collaboration with Film Forum Manipur and the Department of Broadcasting, is poised to host the North East India Film Festival (NEIFF) in Imphal at the Manipur State Film Development Society.
Addressing the media personnel at the Directorate of Information and Public Relations Auditorium in Imphal, Yengkhom Nilachandra, Chairman of the organizing committee, announced a significant milestone. For the first time, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, has granted approval for what they term as a long-awaited venture to organize this event.
Delving into the core objectives of the festival, Nilachandra elaborated on its purpose of fostering the growth of a vibrant and inclusive film industry in North-East India. Emphasizing the primary goal, he stated, “The festival is designed to provide support to filmmakers and technicians who possess a unique vision, aiming to promote artistic excellence and creative freedom. Through the medium of cinema, our intent is to draw attention to and showcase the unparalleled richness of our traditional cultural heritage.”
In articulating the significance of the event, he noted, “This press conference serves as the initial announcement and advertisement for the NEIFF-2024 Festival, reaching out to filmmakers and producers across the eight states of North East India, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. The purpose is to facilitate their participation and entries, setting the stage for a dynamic and engaging festival experience.”
The North East India Film Festival (NEIFF) for the year 2023 stands as a competitive platform dedicated to feature films produced and certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) within the timeframe spanning from January 1 to December 31, 2023. Marking a significant moment, today’s announcement signals the opening of NEIFF 2024, and filmmakers are invited to submit their films for consideration.
The deadline for online applications and film entries is set for February 9, 2024, adding urgency to prospective participants. The official unveiling of the selected films for the festival is scheduled for February 20, 2024. The pinnacle of this cinematic celebration will be the main festival, slated to take place from March 3 to March 7, 2024.
In an effort to streamline the submission process, organizers have designated the North East India Film Festival Directorate at the Manipur State Film and Television Institute (MSFTI) Building, located near the Palace Gate in Imphal (795001), as the central hub for receiving entries. This strategic move not only facilitates the logistical aspects but also serves to underscore the geographical and cultural significance of the host region.
