Imphal, Oct 10:

Manipur marked World Mental Health Day today with a focus on promoting mental well-being in the workplace, addressing the ongoing challenges posed by the post-COVID era. The event, organized by the National Mental Health Program (NMHP) under the National Health Mission (NHM) in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services, was held at Imphal Hotel and attended by health officials, advocates, and key stakeholders.
Dr. Athokpam Ranita, the State Nodal Officer for NMHP Manipur, highlighted the significance of this global observance, which has been celebrated annually on October 10 since 1994. “World Mental Health Day focuses on raising awareness, fostering education, and advocating against the stigma surrounding mental health. Each year, a new theme directs the discussion, and this year’s theme, ‘It is time to prioritize mental health in the workplace,’ is especially important in today’s post-pandemic world,” Dr. Ranita said.
She emphasized the workplace’s crucial role in mental well-being, noting that 60% of the global population is employed and spends about 60% of their time at work. “Around 15% of working-age adults are living with a mental disorder at any given time. This highlights the urgent need for mental health initiatives in the workplace,” she added.
Drawing on data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Ranita further stressed the economic impact of mental health issues. “Depression and anxiety alone contribute to an estimated global economic loss of US$1 trillion annually due to reduced productivity. Creating a supportive work environment is essential not only for employee well-being but also for overall organizational productivity,” she explained.
The event featured several prominent figures, including Hungyo Worshang, Special Secretary of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Manipur; Dr. O. Sanahanbi Devi, Director of Health Services, Manipur; and Dr. M. Dinesh Singh, State Mission Director of NHM, Manipur. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges in the state.
