Manipur Police refute existence of group behind threat against Meiteis ahead of Shirui Festival

Manipur Police have refuted the existence of a group calling itself the “Kuki Zo Village Volunteers Eastern Zone,” which recently circulated a statement warning members of the Meitei community against entering Kuki-dominated areas during the upcoming Shirui Lily Festival.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the police clarified that the purported press release dated May 11, 2025, was being shared on social media platforms and in some local publications. The statement allegedly threatened Meitei individuals with consequences if they attempted to travel through or enter Kuki-inhabited regions during the state-level tourism event.
However, after conducting an investigation, the police confirmed that no such group could be verified. “Following an enquiry by the district police, no such organisation has been found to exist,” the statement said. Authorities have urged the public not to be misled by the “unfounded and baseless” content of the press note.
The police also assured that adequate security measures will be put in place to facilitate the safe and free movement of all citizens throughout the duration of the Shirui Festival.
“Public cooperation is essential to maintaining peace and ensuring a secure environment during the festival,” the police statement added.
The Shirui Lily Festival, held annually in Ukhrul district, celebrates the blooming of the rare Shirui Lily and draws large numbers of visitors from across the state and beyond.
