Manipur Police arrested nine insurgents, including cadres of the Pambei led United National Liberation Front and People’s Liberation Army (PLA), during operations in Thoubal district and Imphal on Monday.
Eight Pambei led UNLF members were apprehended in Thoubal for allegedly using illegal arms to intimidate locals and disrupt land demarcation activities. The arrested individuals were identified as Laishram Atangba Meitei (24), Leishangthem Nongpok Meitei (26), Thongam Khangakpa Meitei (45), Thiyam Ningthou Meitei (46), Akoijam Thoupangba Meitei (24), Thounaojam Sugnu Ngakpa (26), Ngasepam Nongthouba Meitei (40), and Sorokhaibam Nganba (27).
The police recovered a cache of sophisticated weapons, including three AK-47 rifles, two AK-56 rifles, one M-16 rifle, and a 9mm pistol. Additionally, they seized 147 AK-47 rounds, 20 M-16 rounds, 25 9mm rounds, 16 mobile phones, and a Fortuner SUV without a registration number.
In a separate operation, police arrested Moirangthem Maniton Singh (29), a member of the PLA, for his involvement in extortion activities in Imphal, according to the sources.
Despite ongoing peace talks with the government, the Pambei led UNLF cadres were found in possession of advanced weaponry, raising concerns about regional security, according to the authorities. All suspects, along with the seized items, are currently in police custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated.
