Manipur’s triathletes Sarungbam Athouba Meitei and Telheiba Soram opened the medal account for the state team in triathlon competition of 38th National Games Uttarakhand today.
With the beginning of its competition in Haldwani yesterday, state triathlete Sarungbam Athouba Meitei clinched first position(gold) in men’s Triathlon taking 01 hours 01 minute 01 second to complete the course ahead of compatriot Telheiba Soram who took 01 hours,02 minute and 10 seconds to finish second. Parth Sachin Mirage of Maharshatra who settled for third position with a time of 01:02:14.
“We’re so happy to hear the news. In fact, Triathlon always gives us medals right from the National Games hosted by the state way back in 1999,” says founding Secretary Sapam Mohendro Singh of Triathlon Association of Manipur. “We’re also very positive and hopeful for medals from Duathlon and Mixed relays.”
Echoing a similar sentiment, the Triathlon Association of Manipur functionary, the parent of Athouba, Sarungbam Jiten Singh,a resident of Chingamathak Pishum Leikai in Manipur’s Imphal West district also expressed happiness over the success of his son in a national competition.
It may be mentioned that the 8-member triathlon team led by team manager Laitonjam Bebekananda Singh and Triathlon Coach (NIS) Laikhuram Lenin Singh became the first sportspersons team representing Manipur to leave Imphal from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport Imphal for New Delhi by Indigo flight on January 22.
The state Triathlon team was later joined by Saikhom Mani Singh as Technical official from the National Capital.
