The Manipur Information Commission today inaugurated RTI Week 2024 with a grand at the DIPR Auditorium in Imphal. The event marked the beginning of a week-long series of activities dedicated to promoting awareness of the Right to Information (RTI) Act and its importance in fostering transparency and accountability in governance.
The event was attended by Th. Ibobi Singh, Retired Chief Information Commissioner, Manipur Information Commission, as Chief Guest; Dr. Usham Deven Singh, Chairperson, Manipur Pollution Control Board, as Guest of Honour; and Konjam Radhashyam Singh, State Chief Information Commissioner, Manipur Information Commission as President.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Information Commissioner of Manipur highlighted the transformative power of the RTI Act since its enactment in 2005, particularly in empowering citizens to access government-held information. He emphasized the role of the Act in combating corruption and enhancing public participation in governance.
Workshops and interactive sessions were also conducted on two key topics:
1. “Section 4 of the RTI Act, 2005 (Pro-active Disclosure) in light of the Supreme Court’s Judgment dated 17-08-2023, passed in connection with W.P (C) No. 990 of 2021″; and
2. “Online RTI portal for e-filing RTI applications in light of the Supreme Court’s Judgment dated 09-10-2023, passed in connection with W.P (C) No. 360 of 2021.”
The week’s events will continue with awareness campaigns, seminars, and training programs across the state, aimed at strengthening the use of RTI as a tool for good governance.
The celebration in Manipur is part of the broader national RTI Week, which runs from October 5 to October 12, 2024, and focuses on enhancing transparency and empowering citizens throughout India.
