Manipur flood situation remains critical: Water levels surpass flood marks at multiple sites

The Water Resources Department, Government of Manipur, has reported a concerning flood situation across several river basins in the state, with multiple rivers surpassing their flood levels as of 10:00 AM today.
According to the latest daily flood report, heavy rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours has led to significant swelling in rivers, especially those in the Imphal River Basin. The Imphal River at Minuthong has reached a critical level of 788.400 meters, well above the designated flood level of 786.900 meters. Similarly, at Lilong, the river touched 782.850 meters, surpassing the flood threshold of 781.350 meters.
The Iril River at Irilbung Bridge has also breached its flood mark, registering a level of 789.200 meters against the flood level of 787.700 meters. Other rivers like the Nambul at Hump Bridge and the Thoubal at Thoubal Bridge are also flowing significantly above danger marks. The Nambul River stood at 783.675 meters compared to the flood level of 782.175 meters, while the Thoubal River reached 781.415 meters against its flood limit of 779.915 meters.

Other stations, including Litan (Thoubal River), Raj Bhawan, Lamphel, and Jiribam, reported negligible or no rainfall during the same period.
The department has activated flood control measures. All gates of the Ithai Barrage (except Gate No. V) are fully opened to manage water flow. The Imphal Barrage also has its first four gates open while the fifth remains closed. The Shamushang regulator is reported to be fully closed, and Gate No. III of the Thoubal Barrage is slightly opened by 0.20 meters to regulate discharge.
The flood control room at Khuyathong remains on high alert and is closely monitoring river levels. Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to stay vigilant and cooperate with local authorities. Emergency numbers, including 0385-2451550 and 9774660984, have been made available for public assistance.
With rivers breaching flood levels in multiple areas, the government has circulated the report to senior officials including the Chief Secretary, Commissioners of Water Resources and Disaster Management, and the Deputy Commissioners of Imphal East and West, among others, to coordinate mitigation efforts.
