Hunphun/Ukhrul is celebrating Luira Phanit, the seed-sowing festival of Tangkhul Naga, at Mission Ground, Alungtang, Ukhrul under the theme “Ngashan hi Pangshapna” (our culture is our strength). The festival began on February 14 and will continue until February 19.
Ram Muivah, Ukhrul MLA, in his speech as the chief guest of the occasion, said that ‘Luira Phanit’ marks the onset of the seed sowing season. It is an occasion to invoke the Almighty’s blessings for the crops, a bountiful harvest, and the prosperity of the people.
Luira (Lui-Ngai-Ni) is one of the most anticipated festivals for the Tangkhul Nagas in Manipur, falling every year on February 15. Ram Muivah mentioned that in the olden days, their great grandfathers used to celebrate for 12 days.
Ram emphasized the importance of preserving and ensuring the continuity of their rich culture in today’s interconnected world. He highlighted the need for hard work, focus, and entrepreneurship in daily life for a successful existence.
‘Luira Phanit’ has been celebrated since time immemorial by Hunphun, showcasing their rich cultural heritage through various cultural programs and performances like dances, songs, indigenous games, and traditional attire to pass on their cultural values to the new generation.
People from all walks of life in Hunphun/Ukhrul gathered at the jam-packed ground to enjoy the cultural extravaganza during the day-long celebration. The event promoted their roots and cultural identity.
Each Luira Phanit celebration is filled with festivity and tradition, bridging the gap between their roots and modernity.
