Chairman of Loktak Development Authority, M. Asnikumar Singh, addressed the media today during the release of the comprehensive data gathered from the ‘Water Bird Census 2024.’ This census, a collaborative effort between LDA and IBCN, Mumbai, was conducted with the support of the Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of Manipur.
Spanning across 50 different locations, the census involved the dedicated work of 150 volunteers and enumerators, operating under the supervision of Ng. Sanajaoba Meetei, SE/Wetland In-charge at LDA, Dr. RK Birjeet Singh from IBCN Mumbai, and Salam Rajesh Singh, an Environmentalist.
During the briefing, Asnikumar underscored the critical importance of collective efforts to improve the ecological conditions of these wetlands in the future. He extended sincere gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to this significant census.
Furthermore, he highlighted the State Government’s serious commitment to conserving Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands, emphasizing a long-term vision under the leadership of our esteemed CM, N. Biren Singh.
In addition, Asnikumar provided updates on the ongoing rejuvenation initiative in Lamphelpat, noting remarkable improvements achieved within a short period.
He also pointed out that as wetlands improve, the population of water birds is expected to increase annually. He appealed to the people of the state to actively participate in the conservation efforts to protect these rare water birds.
The release of the ‘Water Bird Census 2024’ data marks a significant milestone in the ongoing conservation efforts aimed at preserving the rich biodiversity of Manipur’s wetlands.
