Landslide disrupts traffic on NH-37 in Noney District, Road clearance underway

A landslide triggered by continuous rainfall blocked National Highway-37 (Imphal–Silchar via Jiribam) between Luwangchung and Ramkhul villages in Manipur’s Noney district early Friday morning, causing significant disruption to vehicular movement.
The incident occurred around 5 am, affecting an estimated 50-meter stretch of the highway and leaving several vehicles stranded on both sides. The affected villages are predominantly inhabited by members of the Zeliangrong Naga community.
Traffic along the vital route was halted, with loaded vehicles from the Silchar side via Jiribam and empty vehicles heading towards Assam from Imphal unable to proceed.
Restoration efforts began shortly after, with machinery deployed by ABCI, the company responsible for road construction and maintenance in the region, to clear the debris. Officials expect the clearance operation to take several hours.
Manipur Police reported that security forces, including a CRPF convoy, were deployed to assist in the road clearance. Before the landslide, movement of 177 vehicles carrying essential goods had already been facilitated on the route.
To ensure safety and prevent any further disruption, security measures have been intensified across vulnerable areas. Police have established 110 checkpoints across various districts, although no detentions have been reported so far.
