Landslide breaks NH-2 link between Manipur and Nagaland

Continuous rainfall has triggered a major landslide along National Highway-2, bringing traffic to a halt and effectively cutting off the crucial road link between Nagaland and Manipur. The incident occurred near the exit of Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, the iconic site of Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival.
The landslide, which struck on Sunday, caused a severe collapse of the highway just metres away from the heritage village. The affected area is part of a known sinking zone, and the collapse has left a deep gash in the road, rendering it impassable. Several vehicles, including trucks carrying essential supplies bound for Manipur, were caught at the site, unable to move forward.
A truck was reportedly swept several metres down from the highway due to the intensity of the slide, underlining the vulnerability of the stretch, especially during extreme weather conditions.
Kohima Deputy Commissioner Henok Buchem issued a public advisory confirming that the section of NH-2 between KM 192.050 and KM 192.150 is closed indefinitely. To manage the disruption, all heavy vehicles coming from Manipur are being stopped at Khuzama, while those en route to Manipur from Dimapur are being held at Sechu Zubza.
Authorities have announced alternate one-way routes for light motor vehicles. LMVs heading towards Kohima may use the Demorie Cove or JCC–Kisama–Phesama route. Meanwhile, vehicles bound for Manipur are being redirected via the BSF Camp–Chakhabama–Kidima–Viswema/Mao Gate road network.
Repair work and further assessments are expected once weather conditions permit, though officials have urged commuters to remain cautious and follow the latest traffic updates closely.
