A joint statement from the Central Committee of the Koireng-led UNLF and KYKL today expressed deep condolences over the deaths of MPA Captain Chirom Chiromcha (@ Robindro) and Moirangthem Sushil @ Athouba. Both were members of the UNLF’s Central Cadre and KYKL’s Meeyamgi Yawol Lanmee (MYL) respectively. The statement confirmed that they died in an encounter with a combined force of KNA-B and the Mayang army on January 30, around 1:30 PM.
The statement noted that the deaths were part of the ongoing resistance since January 27, following an attack by the combined forces of the Mayang army and its proxy KNA-B on a revolutionary group near Kamjong, near the Indo-Myanmar border.
As part of the resistance, a team from Manipur, led by Captain Chiromcha, conducted an Area Domination operation near BP-82 and BP-83. The operation was in response to enemy forces attempting to infiltrate through Wokshu Khul near the Myanmar border. Intense fighting ensued, with revolutionary forces launching a counterattack using rockets and lethode bombs. The statement confirmed the deaths of eight enemy troops, including the two identified as Capt. Chiromcha and Pvt. Athouba, who fell at the frontline.
The statement also highlighted the life and legacy of Itao Capt. Chiromcha, born on December 29, 1981, to Chirom Gunindro and Chirom (O) Memcha in Mayang Imphal Thana Awang Leikai. Chiromcha was an active member of AMSU during his youth and later joined the UNLF in 2003. Over the years, he held several key positions within the UNLF, including serving as a Staff Officer and Commander of the Moreh Special Zone. Known for his commitment to the cause and his people, Chiromcha’s leadership was instrumental in stabilizing the UNLF during times of crisis.
Similarly, Pathou Pvt. Athouba (21), from Sugnu Awang Leikai, had joined KYKL in 2024. Known for his bravery and leadership skills, he became an active member of KYKL’s Military Wing, contributing significantly to the movement. Both Chiromcha and Athouba’s sacrifices are seen as crucial in the ongoing struggle for Manipur’s freedom, with their contributions highlighted as key in the larger resistance movement led by the UNLF and its affiliated groups.
Their legacy as respected leaders continues to inspire those committed to the cause of liberation, with their efforts memorialized as part of a shared struggle for a free and self-determined future.
