KAPECON stages protest over Gwaltabi incident, Urges Governor to speak out

The Kanglei People Confederation, Manipur (KAPECON) on Friday staged a protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community Hall condemning the recent Gawaltabi incident.
Addressing the gathering, KAPECON Convenor Keithelakpam Landan said there is growing public outrage and urged the Governor of Manipur to issue a clear and honest statement that reflects the sentiments and concerns of the people. He criticised the clarification given by the Chief Secretary, calling it “inappropriate” and “detached from public sentiment.” According to him, such explanations only fuel further public distrust and unrest.
“If the government truly cares about the people, it must provide an immediate and sincere response,” Landan said. He also expressed concern over reports that some MLAs, after meeting the Chief Minister, may soon propose a new initiative to address the crisis. However, he cautioned that if such measures are not rooted in the actual realities on the ground, they risk worsening the situation rather than resolving it.
In his remarks, the KAPECON Convenor stressed that Manipur is at a decisive juncture, and any attempt to divert attention with vague or half-hearted proposals will only prolong the crisis. He invoked the collective wisdom of the Meitei community, calling for unity and decisive action in the face of adversity.
Calling upon the Governor and elected representatives to show leadership, Landan urged them to make a collective public statement that genuinely addresses the prevailing situation. He also appealed for all Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Manipur to come together on a unified platform to confront the challenges facing the state.
The protest concluded with a renewed call for accountability and transparency from those in power.
