JSCC demands removal of BOSEM Secretary

Imphal, July 23:

The Joint Students’ Co-Ordination Committee (JSCC) has issued a press release demanding the removal of T. Geetchandra, Secretary of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM), by July 29. They insist on selecting a qualified candidate from the teaching profession to fill the position, threatening consequences if their demand is not met.
The press release states, “The self-serving approach in appointing officers within the education sector is the primary cause of its decline in Manipur. BOSEM and the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM), both responsible for examinations and academic activities in the state, have traditionally been led by experienced individuals from the teaching profession. Despite repeated appeals against assigning bureaucratic officers to these roles, the appointment of T. Geetchandra, Additional Director of Education(S), as Secretary of BOSEM is particularly unfortunate.”
The JSCC highlights T. Geetchandra’s involvement in a 2007 corruption case, widely reported in the media, arguing that appointing such a tainted individual tarnishes BOSEM’s reputation. They emphasize that BOSEM officials should adhere to the principle of “One Man One Post,” dedicating themselves solely to their official duties without holding additional posts in other departments. The appointment of the Additional Director of Education(S) as Secretary of BOSEM, therefore, represents a significant misstep.
A memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister, Minister of Education, and Commissioner of the Education Department on May 7, 2024, requesting the removal of T. Geetchandra. Despite numerous attempts, the JSCC has been unable to secure an appointment with the Minister of Education, whom they now deem inept and condemn in the strongest terms.
