Imphal, Aug 1
Members of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) staged a protest rally today demanding stringent action against Sub-Inspector Sh. Nikhil Singh, who assaulted Impact TV reporter R.C. Mangang.
While covering the scuffle that broke out between IDPs and police at the Akampat relief camp area in Imphal East, R.C. Mangang was assaulted by Sub-Inspector Sh. Nikhil Singh. Despite clearly identifying himself as a journalist, he was punched four to five times, sustained injuries to his right chin, and had his phone broken. The reporter was also attacked with a service weapon during the incident.
In response to the assault, AMWJU and EGM held a meeting at the Manipur Press Club at 5 PM, where they resolved to condemn the attack and demand accountability from the police.
Following the meeting, members of EGM and AMWJU marched from the Manipur Press Club to the Chief Minister’s bungalow, calling for the termination of Sub-Inspector Sh. Nikhil Singh. They also plan to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister regarding the incident.
