As observed every year, the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) today observed the 49th Hunger Marchers’ Day by paying fitting tribute to the four student martyrs who  sacrificed their lives on this day of 1965 during the mass uprising against artificial food scarcity in the state. The day is popularly known as “Chaklam Khongchat Ningshing Numit”. This year’s celebration is even more significant as almost all the students’ bodies  are presently engaging in a movement to introduce certain kind of legislation to check the entry of  outsiders in the state. The real cause of the mass uprising was due to the presence of outnumbered traders from outside the state which transported the rice product of state to outside the state.Since 3 am early today morning, large number of students gathered at Chingamacha and begins the observance with Yaikairol. Later at around 9 am family members of the student leaders who laid their lives during the agitation, leaders of AMSU and students of different educational institutions paid floral tributes to the photos of Oinam Nabakumar, Laishram Chaobal, Nongmeikapam Pramodini and Waikhom Nilamani at the students’ memorial site at Pishum Chinga Macha. President of AMSU, Thiyam Naresh led the floral tribute paying ceremony. The agitation incidentally is the birth of the All Manipur Students’ Union. Recalling the series of events as well as commemorating the president of the student body hoisted the flag of the student Union AMSU.Later a students’ rally was organized with active participation of thousands of students from Pishum Lampak under Sinngjamei police station to DM College Campus under Imphal police station before the participating the rally converged at the DM Multipurpose Hall for a public meeting. While staging the rally, the students were seen shouting slogans such as ‘implement the Inner Line Permit System’, ‘don’t let outsiders control our food grains’ etc.Former President AMSU Irom Gambhir, President AMSU Thiyam Naresh, Principal DM College of Commerce Ng Brajakumar Singh, President UCM, General Secretary NESO Sinam Prakash and Former Finance Secretary AMSU Tongbram (o) Premita share the dais in the day’s hunger marcher’s day function.
