Imphal, August 16: State government celebrated the 68th Independence Day of the country amidst boycott and 12 hour general strike called by various rebel groups of the region. The main celebration was held at 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh as the chief guest under tight security arrangement. Many armed and unarmed security personnel including the women police and CRPF personnel were deployed at almost all the strategic locations in and around Imphal to avoid any unwanted incidents while the state was observing the historic day.
Unfurling the tri-colour National Flag, chief guest of the function, O Ibobi Singh while addressing the gatherings, said that his government is committed to work for the welfare of the people of the state by taking various developmental activities. For this he sought help and cooperation from all walks of life in the state. About 7 state policemen against 13 policemen last year were also decorated with several awards on the occasion. Chief Minister distributed one prestigious President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and 6 Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service to seven state police personnel on the occasion of the 68th independence day.
As many as 40 march past contingents took part in the march past parade during the main function at 1st MR Parade ground. Manipur Governor VK Duggal had also hoisted the national tricolour at the Raj Bhavan Imphal in connection with the 68th Independence Day celebration yesterday. There are also reports of observing Independence day at all the district headquarters of the state.
