CWG Glasgow participants felicitated

Medalists, participants and team officials in the 20th Commonwealth Games (CWG) held at Glasgow, Scotland were felicitated today by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Manipur at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal.Attending the felicitation program as President, Chief Minister of the state, Okram Ibobi said that the state justified the name of ‘power house of sports persons at National level’ and made the country proud by achieving laurels in Games and Sports at National and International levels by winning medals. By bagging 8 medals; one gold, six silvers and one bronze in the recently concluded Common Wealth Games at Glasgow the players of the state has brought laurels to the state, the Chief Minister said. He added that the state is not lagging behind other states in terms of participation and winning of medals. He mentioned the achievement of M.C. Mary Kom, who became the first Indian to win a Bronze medal in Women’s Boxing and the contribution of the other 4 players from the state who had represented India in the last Olympic Games, 2012 held in London. He added that the Government of India is going to start a Sports’ University in Manipur and for which an allocation of Rs 100 crores is made in the current financial year as announced in the Union budget which is mainly because of the efforts put up by the players from Manipur in National and International levels.Kh. Sanjita Chanu, the gold medallist 48 kg weight lifting in the CWG received the maximum cash award of 15 Lacs. After receiving the award, Sanjita shared her personal experience in life as a player. She said she had no money to buy enough protein as her parents are financially poor. She also appealed to the government to build a hostel for those who love sport but financially poor. She also requested to give her a government job and said that would encourage players to work harder and achieve more success.Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, silver medalist in 48 kg in weightlifting, Shushila Devi, silver medallist in 48 kg in Judo, Laishram Devendro Singh, silver medallist 49 kg in boxing, Laishram Sarita, silver medallist in 57-60 kg, Kh. Kothajit Singh, silver medallist in Hockey, K. Chinglensana Singh, silver medallist in Hockey received cash award of 10 Lacs each. Bronze medallist in Judo in 52 kg, Thoudam Kalpana Devi received cash award of 8 Lacs. Other participants in the CWG also received cash awards of 2 Lacs each.While speaking during the function Laishram Sarita said her own baby doesn’t remember her and breaks down emotionally but she will never quit boxing as her dream is more important than anything. She said she was disappointed as she couldn’t attend the 2012 Olympic game but she will not miss a chance in to get Gold in the future Olympic game. She also appealed the government to provide full equipment of the Sports Authority of India.
