Rights activists alleges MLA E Chand of inciting mob culture

Imphal, July 23: Human rights defenders of the state today vehemently condemned the attack to the offices of Women Action for Development (WAD) and Center for Social Development (CSD) located at Palace Compound in Imphal East and also assault to a staff of the office by unidentified persons on the afternoon of July 12. The rights defender also alleges Yaiskul Assembly Constituency MLA Elangbam Chand of inciting mob justice instead of controlling the situation.

In a meeting held today at Manipur Press Club, human rights defenders of the state demanded prosecution and punishment of all those involved in the assault of the NGO worker Th. Premila of Khangabok Palli Leikai and also attack to both the offices of the CSD and WAD.

Representatives of the Human Rights Alert, Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur Center for Social Development, Human Rights Initiative and Women Action for Development were present in the meeting.

According to officials of the WAD and CSD the incident happened over parking space controversy in front of the two offices. A member said that some youths from the Palace Compound deflated two vehicles belonging to the staffs of the two organizations , parked in front of CSD and WAD near the office gate on July 12 at around  12 noon. The staffs member of the Wad further said that the as the matter went wild the Porompat Police has been informed and even the local MLA Elangbam Chand had arrived on the spot. The unidentified people allegedly assaulted a worker of the identified as Th. Premila of Khangabok Palli Leikai in the presence of the local MLA E Chand.

Human Rights defenders condemn the MLA for not trying to solve the matter amicably. An activist said that no notification has been served regarding the parking of vehicles and it was gross violation of human rights to deflate the tryes of the vehicles parked in front of the office without proper notification. 

They further demanded for urgent investigation and prosecution of all those involved in the demolition of parking space without any eviction order. They also urged to promote full scale protection and rights of all human rights defenders and their organizations in Manipur besides formulation of specific laws to protect the human rights defenders in accordance with the provisions of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.
