Condemning the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by a CJM Court of Surat in Gujarat and protesting the disqualification of the Congress leader from the membership of the Lok Sabha, Congress party across the country have staged a day-long ‘ ‘Satyagraha’ in front of Gandhi statues from 10 am to 5 pm today.
Members of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) staged the ‘Satyagraha’ in front of Mahatama Gandhi Statue at Congress Bhavan here in BT Road, Imphal. MPCC President K. Meghachandra, CLP Leader Okram Ibobi, CWC member Gaikhangam, MLA K. Ranjit, MLA Th. Lokeshwor, MLA Surajkumar Okram, and various other leaders of the MPCC and its frontal wings including Youth wing leaders were present in the Satyagraha staffed at Congress Bhavan.
Speaking to reporters, MPCC President K. Meghachandra had stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA Government has belittled the meaning of democracy by imposing dictatorial form of government. He said that the voice of Congress leader has been silence by misusing the democratic organs of the country by Narendra Modi regime.
“Our leader Rahul Gandhi had only questioned the criminal attitude of Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi and Narendra Modi during a political meeting held at a place in Karnataka”, Meghachandra told media persons.
He said that the Modi government is giving award to the wrong doers while imprisoning those standing for the truth. He also said that democratic voice of the opposition has been silence by the Modi government. The questioned raised by Rahul Gandhi during parliament session demanding reason for providing huge amount of loan to Adani group has not recorded in the parliamentary proceedings.
He further said that Rahul Gandhi is not alone and millions of Congressmen and people irrespective of their political affiliations will join him in this fight for truth and justice.
At New Delhi the Congress staged a day-long “Sankalp Satyagraha” at Delhi’s Rajghat in support of Rahul Gandhi following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, senior leaders KC Venugopal, P Chidambaram and Salman Khurshid were among the party’s top brass taking part in the satyagraha at Rajghat.
Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, Pawan Kumar Bansal, Saktisinh Gohil, Jothimani, Pratibha Singh and Manish Chatrath were also present at the protest site.
Several leaders of the party’s Delhi also took part in the protest while a large number of party workers gathered outside the venue despite the police refusing to grant permission for the Satyagraha.
In a letter, the Delhi Police said the request for holding the Satyagraha was rejected due to law and order and traffic reasons and prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC had been imposed in and around Rajghat.
In response to the Delhi Police’s action, Venugopal said on Twitter, “After silencing our voice in Parliament, the government has refused to let us hold a peaceful Satyagraha at Bapu’s (Mahatma Gandhi) Samadhi as well.
“It has become a habit for the Modi government to disallow every opposition protest. This will not deter us, our fight for truth, against tyranny goes on,” Venugopal said.
Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. The disqualification will prevent Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting elections for eight years unless a higher court stays the conviction.
