Imphal, Nov 5:

The decision of the University Grants Commission, taken on the behest of the Government of India, to close down the Seven Regional Offices of UGC is deeply deplorable, democratic, and unfortunate.
A statement by Prof. Arun Kumar, General Secretary of All India Federation of University & College Teachers’ Organizations (AIFUCTO) said that those Regional Offices have been the center of serving the academic interest of the university and college teachers at the doorsteps besides closely monitoring the qualitative interest of Higher Education at the Grassroots level. The teaching Community of the country has benefits without going to New Delhi.
It added that the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organization feels that the retrograde step is only the beginning of constituting the centralizing agency of the Higher Education Commission by dismantling all the National academic bodies such as UGC, AICTE, ICAR, etc. This measure to do away with the Regional Offices of University Grants Commission is not only undemocratic but also against the federal structure of our nation. This decision is also a naked attempt to impose the National Education policy upon the collective wisdom of the nation.
To save the Education of the country AIFUCTO cannot expected to be a silent spectator to the implementation of the unwarranted decision of the Government of India and will oppose strongly the negative decision of the Government. AIFUCTO still hope that the Government of India will realize the detrimental impact of closing down the Regional Offices of UGC and instead take steps to ensure strengthening the grassroots link of the University Grants Commission in the larger interest of the congenial growth of the Higher Educational edifice of our nation.
