Jagdeep Dhankhar elected 14th Vice President of India

NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar (71) won the vice-presidential election to become the 14th Vice-President of India defeating Opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a margin of 346 votes in an election held on Saturday.
Of the 725 votes polled, Dhankhar bagged 528 votes and Margaret Alva got 182 votes, while 15 votes became invalid. As many as 55 MPs did not vote in the election held from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday.
The Trinamool Congress abstained from the election. However, two of its MPs had cast their ballots. There were eight vacancies in Rajya Sabha – four from Jammu and Kashmir, three nominated, and one from Tripura. There are 543 members in Lok Sabha and 237 in Rajya Sabha.

The term of incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10. The members of both Houses of Parliament throughout the day voted to elect the next Vice-President. The new Vice-President will take the oath of office on August 11.
With support from regional parties like the Janata Dal (United), YSRCP, BSP, AIADMK, and Shiv Sena (breakaway faction), Dhankhar from the very start was up for an easy win. Alva got the backing of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
While Dhankhar is a Jat leader from Rajasthan with a socialist background. He is a lawyer by profession. He joined politics in 1990. He was the member of the Union cabinet led by the former Prime Minister late P V Narsimha Rao. He became the governor of West Bengal in July 2019 and made headlines since then over his tumultuous relations with the Mamata Banerjee government. Subsequently, he tendered his resignation as the governor of West Bengal.
The 80-year-old Alva is a Congress veteran and has served as governor of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Goa and Gujarat. A five-term Member of Parliament, Alva has held the Parliamentary Affairs and Youth Affairs portfolios in the Central cabinet.
