Imphal, June 7:

The Giant Himalayan Lily(Cardiocrinum giganteum)which grows on the hill slopes of this picturesque village located about 120 km northeast of Imphal in Senapati district attracts visitors including the Mega Miss Northeast during its flowering season this year.

This came to light when this reporter  visited the flowering site of this fragrant trumpet-shaped lily at Liyai Khullen village inhabited by the Poumai tribes last week.

According to chairman DK Isaac Cassi of the village, this Giant Himalayan Lily popularly known as ‘beivoli’ in the local dialect which grows on a large scale on the western slopes of heudu blue hill range which surrounds the village with an altitude of 2500m,flowers for about two-three weeks spreading from May to June every year.

But this time, many people from the state and neighbouring states including those from Madhya Pradesh visited to witness these lilies, the chairman said adding that Last year, the Director of Tourism department led officials had also visited to inspect the village and other tourism potential areas.

This little known majestic lily is said to be the largest lily species of any of the lily plants growing up to 2-3 metres high.

Here I would like to urge the government to develop the flowering site and other tourism potential spots in our village, he felt.

It may be mentioned that Manipur’s largest river Barak originates from Liyai Khullen village which also houses two centuries old twin banyan trees- locally known as two Rakaitbei.

Considering the tourism potentials of the village having a population of more than 13,000, the village elders have been seeking public attention in conserving the forest and biodiversity of the village.
