Manipur Pradesh Congress party today staged a protest demonstration over the arrest of the AICC leader Priyanka Gandhi by UP police as well as the alleged killing of 8 people including 4 farmers who were protesting the withdrawal of the three firm Bills after being hit by the vehicle of the UP Home Minister.
AICC observer Jairam Ramesh, MPCC President N Loken and other congress leaders and workers joined the protest. The MPCC members led by the state President and the AICC observer Jairam Ramesh staged a protest rally at BT road towards the Governor’s Bungalow. However they were stopped by the police at midway. Slogans denouncing the killing of the farmers, and demand for withdrawal of the 3 farm bills as well as demand for release of Priyanka Gandhi were shouted during the rally here in Imphal.
Meanwhile Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has been formally arrested for violating Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, for disrupting peace and under other sections, a source said.
Gandhi was detained on her way to meet farmers in the violence-hit Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh. She was going to meet the families of farmers who were killed in violence when she was detained on Sunday night.
SHO of Hargaon Police Station said that an FIR has been registered against 11 people including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Deependra Hooda and Ajay Kumar Lallu for disturbing peace.
IANS reported that PAC guest house where she has been under detention since Monday, has been notified as a temporary jail.
The case, according to official sources, has been filed under Sections 151, 107 and 116, on a report given by the station house officer of Hargaon to the magistrate, the report said.
