Man arrested for allegedly committing sexual assault to two minor girls; remanded for 6 days in police custody

A 40 years old man identified as LW Phaningmi (40 yrs) S/o LW Luinam of Lunghar village of Ukhrul district was arrested for allegedly committing sexual assault on two minor girls by a team of Ukhrul Police near Shirui village yesterday. He was produced before the CJM Ukhrul district and remanded for 6 days and police custody. He will be produced on the 7th day and the police may likely take more days to remand in police custody as there is two separate FIR lodged against him.
Source said that the alleged accused was arrested near Shurui Village while he was travelling in his Alto Car from Lunghar Village towards Ukhrul town yesterday. The police team have been hunting for him following complaints lodged by the fathers of the victim minor girls on September 30 separately.
As per the complaint by the fathers, the two minor children was sexually assaulted on September 28. The report said that the alleged accused committed sexual assault against a minor child while she was alone in her room attending an online class on September 28. On the same day (Evening), the accused again committed the same nature of offence against another child. Both the parents of the victim lodged complaints against the shameful act to the Women Police Station Ukhrul.
SI Vashum Meena, Officer-in-Charge of Women Police Station, Ukhrul lodged two separate cases for each of the offences under FIR No. 4(9)2021 W-PS/Ukhrul u/s 448 IPC & 8 POCSO Act, 2012, and FIR No. 5(9)2021 W-PS/Ukhrul u/s 366-A IPC & 8 POCSO Act, 2012.
Source from the police said that SI Vashum Meena immediately coordinated with Ukhrul Police Station to execute the arrest of the accused person. SI Marchang W of Ukhrul Police Station swung into action and raided at all possible places including the house of the accused, LW Phaningmi on the intervening night of September 30 and October 1. However, the accused could not be arrested and remained at large.
Based on reliable inputs, SI Marchang W under the supervision of Saujanya Singh, IPS, SP/Ukhrul conducted extensive frisking and checking near Shirui village on NH-202 on October 1. During the checking, the alleged accused was found travelling in an Alto Car from Lunghar village towards Ukhrul. After proper verification, he was arrested and brought to Ukhrul Police Station.
