NIA takes Athuan Abonmai murder case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken the ‘Athuan Abonmai murder case’.

An order issued Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India said that the gruesome murder of Abonmai is a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008.

The Central Government has directed the National Investigation Agency to take up investigation of the as the crime has been committed and, having regard to the gravity of the offence and to unearth the full conspiracy hatched by the accused, it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency in accordance with the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008.

The Central Government received the Information regarding registration of on FIR No.4(09)/2021 doted 22/09/2021 at Police Station- Lamphel, District – Imphal West, Manipur under Sections 385, 400 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, relating to kidnapping/abduction of Athuan Abonmai, by cadres of NSCN (IM) on 22.09.2021 at 11.30 hrs from Tarnenglong Head Quarter Polo ground. Subsequently, on the same day i e 22/09/2021, the case was transferred to Tamenglong Police Station as the place of occurrence was under the jurisdiction of Tamenglong Police Station and section 302 and 307 of Indian Penal Code have been added in the instant case as Athuan Abonmai was found dead in Pallong village. Further Section 16/17 and 20 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 are added in the case, the accused persons and their associates being members of terrorist gang and are raising funds for terror activities and disturbing the peace and tranquility of the state.

The order said that, upon initial Inquiry, it was revealed that the accused persons involved in the case are suspected members of NSCN (IM). Therefore, sections 16, 17 and 20 of UA (P) Act, 1967 have also been added in the Instant case.
