Sanctioned fund for drought 2021 relief fund freezes with the state Finance Department – PANDAM

For reasons best known to the authority of the state Finance department of the Government of Manipur, relief fund sanctioned from the National Disaster Relief Fund by the Central government for distribution to the affected people of the state by drought as per report prepared by respective District administration of the state remains pending with the state Finance department.

The fund was sanction for the drought-affected people of the state that occurred in 2019, said a statement by People’s Action for National Democratic Movement, a civil right body popularly known as PANDAM.

The statement said that after the 2019 drought had severely affected many of the people of the state a mass survey was conducted in every district of the state under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of each district. Following the survey report, the Central government had sanctioned an amount of Rs. 24.65 Crore from the National Disaster Relief Fund. The PANDAM said that this fund which has to be distributed to the affected people through the Deputy Commissioner of each district remain pending with the state Finance department since May 25, 2021.

The PANDAM said that had the affected people get the relief amount, the people could have found some relieved but the people are not getting their legitimate share as the Finance department put on hold the fund for the people.

On the other hand relief assistant sought for the disaster caused by the 2019 cyclone, that destroyed many houses, schools, colleges etc. are still yet to be received. The disaster caused by the cyclone was well surveyed by the Deputy Commissioner of each district and after they submitted the report, the state-level committee had urged the authority for relief. However, the matter remains silent burdening additional pain to the public amidst the current Covid-19 pandemic.
