Fitting tribute paid to June 18 martyrs

Fitting tribute was paid to the martyrs of the June 18 uprising, where 21 peoples laid down their life for the protection of the territorial integrity of the state.

After the Bangkok Agreement was signed between the Government of India and the armed rebel group NSCN-IM on June 14 for extension of the cease-fire agreement ‘without territorial boundary’, people of the state strongly opposing the agreement uproar and protest across the state with the climax reaching on June 18, 2001. The state Assembly was burned, many offices of the political parties were vandalized, and many official quarters of the politicians and the representatives were also vandalized on that day. 14 people were killed after the security forces fired upon the agitator and many injured in the police action.

Some of the protestors died in the later agitation raising the number to 21.

The day is observed as the Great June Uprising day and Unity day. Many people from across the state paid floral tributes to the memorial site of the June 18 martyrs at Kekrupat here in Imphal. 

On the other hand, the Great June Uprising, Unity Day is being observed today at the residence of Oinam Romen Singh, the intending Candidate of the Singjamei Assembly Constituency in the ensuing State General Election.
