After Manipur High Court declared Yumkham Erabot Singh as the legitimate representative of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly of the 15- Wangkhei Assembly, the MLA was sworn in as MLA of 15-Wangkhei Assembly Constituency today at a ceremony held at Conference Hall (Ground Floor) of the Annexe Building, Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat, Imphal.
Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Y. Khemchand administered the oath of office and secrecy. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, MLA’s M. Rameshwor and Y. Antas Khan attended the swearing-in-ceremony.
Mention may be made that three bench of Justice M.V. Muralidaran of the Manipur High Court, in its ruling April 15 declared the election result of Wangkhei Assembly Constituency MLA Okram Henry as null and void. The High Court order also declared Y. Erabot, the petitioner of the case as duly elected member of the 15-Wangkhei Assembly Constituency.
Interestingly, Okram Henry Singh, who was elected as Congress MLA in the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Wangkhei AC had resigned along with four other Congress MLA and had officially joined the BJP. After their resignation and disqualification of some MLA, 13 seats remain vacant. Due to pending election case in High Court by-election were conducted in 5 Assembly constituencies at which BJP won in 4 seat.
The By-election of Wangkhei AC was not held due to the pending election case filed by the BJP candidate Y Erabot in November last year. But Okram Henry was appointed as Minister by the N. Biren Singh government. After the expiry of six months and unable to get himself elected as MLA, Okram Henery remain as a mere politician with no legitimate position in the government.
With the winning of one more BJP MLA , the strength of the BJP is 24 now.
