Imphal, April 06:

Following the arrest of three leaders of All Tribal Student’s Union Manipur (ATSUM), the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), and the All Naga Student’s Association Manipur has announced total shut down in the whole of hill district with effect from 10 am today. The three student leaders of ATSUM – Simthar Jajo (Rights & Reservation Secy.) Khaiminlen Doungel (Information Secy) and Kakai Singsit (Finance Secretary) were arrested from their respective home last night by the Manipur Police in connection with the agitation of ATSUM over the delay of the ADC Election in Manipur.
The ATSUM had started the closure of government offices in Hill district yesterday as a part of their agitation.
The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) and the All Naga Student’s Association called the total shut down in the Hill area demanding the immediate release of the 3 ATSUM leaders.
The bandh is supported by the Kuki Students’ Organisation Churachandpur and other student bodies of Churachandpur District.
A KSO statement said that while the Shutdown will be strictly enforced, Media and Medical Emergencies will be relaxed from the purview of the Shutdown.
Mention may be made that the state government had announced to conduct the ADC election by June 25.
Tamenglong Village Students’ Federation (TVSF) also expressed strong condemnation to the arrest of three ATSUM leaders over the democratic agitation on the issue of delayed ADC election by the State Government and demanded unconditional release.
A statement said that TVSF fully endorses the Emergency Total Shutdown called by ATSUM (supported by KSO and ANSAM) in all tribal inhabited Districts effecting 10 a.m. of April 6.
TVS said that a democratic agitation is a form of dissent and it is our rights guaranteed by the constitution of India and arresting the dissenting leaders is not part of the solution but it is part of the problems. TVSF appealed to the CM, Manipur, and Governor, Manipur to immediately intervene on this matter so that the issue is resolved once and for all.
