Imphal, Nov 4:

Members of the Thongju Kendra Tengbang Lup (TKTL), an organization set up to extend all sort of physical and moral assistance to the people during hard times like COVID-19 today alleges intimidation from local MLA of Thongju Assembly constituency using police force.

In a press meet held today at Manipur Press club today afternoon Vice president of the Thongju Kendra Tengbang Lup (TKTL), Sadokpam Somorjit said that he summoned by the Officer in charge of the Irilbung Police station on Novemebr 3, 2020 at around 2 pm without giving proper reason.

He said that after reaching the Irilbung Police station the Officer in charge without giving any reason told him to sit along with one of his company and in the meawhile he called the local MLA , who is also a minister in the government and handed over the cell phone to talk with him. The MLA allegedly threaten him while talking from the other end to jail him for speaking against him.

I was told to make an apology through social networking site Facebook however, the matter was flatly rejected as they committed no wrong, the TKTL said. After detaining him at the police station for around sme hours they were released at around 6 pm of the day.

The news about the harassment and the intimidation by detaining them for hours had angered the local people and appealed the police not to repeate such act in the future.

The TKTL said that such action by the local MLA and the police is a clear instance of violation of human rights and dignity by the state security forces. Moreover, the volunteers of TKTL are also presently engaged in a hectic schedule for conducting the Mass Awareness Campaign on Covid-19 Pandemic in the whole Thongju Assembly Constituency. It is also doubtful that the MLA and the police are trying to disturb the ongoing Covid-19 awareness campaign in Thongju Assembly Constituency.
