Imphal, Sept 24:

Mass Awareness Campaign against illicit poppy/ganja cultivation and drugs in Manipur, which started from September 15 concluded today. A closing function was held at 1st M.R. Banquet hall.

Altogether 80 village chiefs and representatives attended the session , and discussed in depth about the issue. The village chiefs/representatives , who attended the program are from villages of Senapati, Kamjong, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Churachandpur, Ukhrul and Bishnupur Districts. The said meeting was chaired by L.M. Khaute, IPS, Director General of Police, Manipur and attended by other senior police officers, namely, Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, IPS, Addl. Director General of Police (Int.), Clay Khongsai, IPS, IGP Z-II, Lunsieh Kipgen, IPS, IGP Z- III,  K. Jayanta,IPS, Inspector General of Police, Zone- I, K. Radhashyam Singh, IPS, IGP (Int./NAB), Themthing N., IPS, DIG R-I and R-II, Angam Romanus IPS, DIG-III, K. Kabib, IPS, DIG R-IV, Ningshen W., IPS, SP/Ukhrul, Pradeep, IPS, SP/Senapati, Vikramjit Singh, MPS, SP/Tengnoupal, W. Basu Singh, MPS, SP/Narcotics and Affairs of Border, Manipur, Priyadashini, MPS, SP/Bishnupur, Ningam Siro MPS, SP/Kamjong, Madhunimai, MPS, SP/Chandel and Shivanand Surve, IPS, ASP/Churachandpur.

In the said meeting, wide-ranging strategies & issues were discussed for containment of illicit poppy/ganja cultivation and drug menace in the state. The Village chiefs also reiterated their stance against poppy cultivation and proposed for alternative crops to replace poppy. This meeting has clearly demonstrated willingness of both the public and the police to fight this drug menace together. While highlighting the current drug and illicit poppy cultivation in Manipur, the DGP has appealed to the conscience of the gathering to put in sincere efforts jointly for the sake of the future generations. The village chiefs were requested to submit to their respective SPs plans for alternative cropping/ means of livelihood for onward submission to the government.
