New Delhi, 12 Sept:

In a major reshuffle, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi reconstituted the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and the Central Election Authority of the party and sacked rebels from the top posts, on Friday.

The reshuffle came after Sonia Gandhi offered to resign during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on August 24, after 23 leaders, including Senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, sent her a letter seeking an overall in the party’s leadership. The meeting, however, decided to continue Sonia Gandhi as interim president until an election is conducted for the party’s president post within six months.

Azad, who had rebelled against Sonia Gandhi at the CWC meet was sacked from the general secretary position. However he continues to be a CWC member. Besides Azad, Ambika Soni, Motilal Vohra, Luzenio Falerio and Mallikarjun Kharge were also dropped from the list of general secretaries.

Former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal was made AICC in charge of administration, replacing Motilal Vora. Randeep Surjewala, turned out to be the biggest gainer, since he was appointed as AICC General Secretary of Karnataka and also a member of the six-member committee that will aid the Congress president in running the affairs of the party.

Jitin Prasad received a promotion despite being a signatory on the controversial letter to Sonia Gandhi. He was appointed as the in-charge for poll-bound West Bengal, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Rajeev Shukla was appointed as the in-charge of Himachal Pradesh.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will continue to be in charge of Uttar Pradesh, while Manickam Tagore will be the new secretary in-charge for Telangana. Harish Rawat will be general secretary in-charge Punjab. Former Minister Tariq Anwar was made both general secretary in-charge of poll-bound Kerala and Lakshadweep and also a member of the CWC. Anwar had left the Congress, along with Sharad Pawar and PA Sangma, and floated the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) during a similar leadership crisis in the party in 1999. However, he returned to the party before 2019 general elections.

Jitendra Singh was made in-charge of Assam, and Oommen Chandy was appointed as the in-charge for Andhra Pradesh. New members of the Congress Working Committee are: Digvijay Singh, Rajiv Shukla, Manickam Tagore, Pramod Tiwari, Jairam Ramesh, HK Patil, Salman Khurshid, Pawan Bansal, Dinesh Gundurao, Manish Chatrath and Kuljit Nagra. Besides P Chidambaram, Jitendra Singh, Tariq Anwar and Randeep Singh Surjewala have been made regular members, while Azad  continues to be a CWC member. Madhusudan Mistry, Rajesh Mishra, Krishna Byre Gowde, S Jothimani and Arvinder Singh Lovely have been appointed as members of the new Central Election Authority.

“The party whole-heartedly appreciates the contribution of outgoing general secretaries Ghulam Nabi Azad, Motilal Vohra, Ambika Soni, Mallikarjun Kharge and Luizinho Falerio,” the Congress said in a statement. Sources said the reshuffle was an indication towards promoting loyalists of Rahul Gandhi, who is, according to them, set to be the next Congress president again.

The new incumbents are: General secretaries: Mukul Wasnik(Madhya Pradesh), Harish Rawat(Punjab), Oommen Chandy(Andhra Pradesh), Tariq Anwar(Kerala and Lakshadweep), Priyanka Gandhi Vadra-Uttar Pradesh), Randeep Singh Surjewala (Karnataka), Jitendra Singh (Assam), Ajay Makan(Rajasthan), K C Venugopal (organisation).
