A day after the high profile political drama ended with the election of lone Rajya Sabha seat for Manipur, sidelining the minds of the people for some times from the COVID-19 scare, students’ bodies in the stated unfolded commercialization of education sector by some private schools by victimizing students violating their rights to education.
Soon after the announcement of the result of the High School leaving Examination conducted by BOSEM on June 15, some private schools completed the admission process without making it public and depriving the rights of many students, said Bruce Pebam, Secretary of the HRD of All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) in a press meet held today at its office premises. The same statement is also echoed by Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) in a separate press statement issued by its publicity secretary H. Babulu.
Pointing out the violation of SOPs issued by the government to contain the COVID -19 pandemic by some private school, the KSA statement said that students who had passed the HSLC and applied for admission to the school were cancelled without giving proper reason for those students selected could not paid the admission fees with a given time which is not more than 1 or two hours.
At this time of COVID-19 crisis people are facing extreme suffering due to restriction in movement and depriving admission to students just because they cannot paid money within one or two hours is not less than blackmailing of the students, said the KSA statement adding that at this time of crisis it is not possible for many family to afford payment of Rs. 12/13 thousands within such short period. On the other hand some schools completed the admission even before the completion of the online submission of admission form by inviting those students of their choice through SMS, the KSA said saying that one such school is Herbert School Changangei.
The KSA warns the Herbert School to clarify the process of admission and correct the wrong procedure practice by them in the interest of the students’ community. The KSA also warned other schools which are being complaint for conducting similar irregularity violating the rights of the students.
Human Resource Secretary of AMSU, Bruce Pebam, while talking to media persons said that the students’ body will not remain quite over the commercialization of education sector.
“AMSU is taking with extreme seriousness to the way that some private schools are admitting the students under their whims and fancies without transparency”, Bruce Pebam said while warning the private schools.
The AMSU HRD Secretary also said that treating of some students who are position holders as commodities by some private schools will not be tolerated and if in case such practice is caught , the AMSU will not only ban the school but also the career of the student accepting such offer may land in trouble.
The AMSU also drew the attention of the government to make sure that the careers of the students are not stake due to the irresponsible practice of some schools.
On the other hand, Bruce Pebam further urged the Council of Higher Secondary School Manipur (COHSEM) to announce the exam scheduled that has been postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.
