Government fully committed to uphold dignity and honour of Women: Chief Minister

Remembering the brave Mothers of Manipur who fought against the mighty British, the State level ‘Nupee Lan Day, 2019’ was observed at Nupee Lal Memorial Complex, Imphal today. 

On the occasion, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Y. Joykumar graced as Chief Guest and President respectively. 

Speaking as Chief Guest of the function, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said that the present government is fully committed to uphold the dignity and honour of women. He mentioned that the government has established Fast Track Court to deal crimes against women to deliver justice in short period of time. Special Women Cells have been also opened in all the Police Stations of the State, he added. 

Stressing out the unique qualities and talents of Manipuri women, N. Biren Singh mentioned that it is indeed a matter of pride that many Manipuri women are at the forefront in various fields in the country. In Manipur, many women hold top post of various government departments, he added. He also pointed out that Manipur topped in women ownership of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) businesses in the country. Manipur women owned 50 per cent of the MSME businesses when compared to national figure which is about 20-30 per cent, he added. 

The Chief Minister asserted that there is a need for another Nupee Lal to fight against various problems prevailing in the society such as drug menace, alcoholism etc. There is rampant drug menace and alcoholism in the State and a collective effort is needed to tackle it, he added. He further appealed to all the government officials to work with commitment and dedication for bringing development in the State.

Mentioning that the present venue for the Nupee Lal observation is creating certain inconveniences to the public, Chief Minister stated that the government is planning to shift the Nupilal observation to another venue from next year. He maintained that the observation would be organised in grand scale by creating awareness about the essence and relevance of Nupee Lal in the present society and added that prominent women leaders from each locality would be invited to attend the observance from next year. The State Cabinet will discuss in this regard, he added. 

While delivering the Presidential address, Deputy Chief Minister Y. Joykumar Singh stressed on the role of Manipuri women in Nation building. Paying tribute to all the brave mothers of Manipur, he narrated the courage of the Mothers who fought against the mighty British. He further added that we must not forget the supreme sacrifices and valour of our brave mothers. 

Prior to the function, Chief Minister led others in laying floral tributes to the statue of brave mothers of the State. During the observation, a play based on Nupee Lal was performed by joint artistes of Nupee Lal Memorial Association and Nupee Lal & Khongjom War Memorial Society.  

Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary, DGP, Administrative Secretaries, top civil and police officials and others attended the function.
