Khengjonglang to host 1st Northeast Nupi drama festival

First ever North East Nupi(women) drama festival cum national seminar on theatre will be organized with the support of the Sangeet Natak Akademi New Delhi in Manipur next month as part of empowering women through their works.The festival cum national seminar on theatre will be held at the picturesque Khengjonglang theatre complex near Irilbung in Imphal East district.
Chairperson K Radhakumar of the organizing committee of the women drama festival cum seminar accompanied by other organizing committee members made an announcement during a press conference at the Manipur Press club this afternoon.
Radhakumar, a retired IAS officer also informed that altogether 10 women theatre groups of the northeast will present 10 different plays during the festival which will be begin from December 2 and it will continue till December 11.
At the same time a national seminar on theatre will also held as part of the festival from December 3-6 next. Prominent women theatre Directors of north eastern states are also exhibiting their feminine aesthetic and sensibility through their plays,he said.
Prominent women theatre Directors of the northeast namely Ima Sabitri of Kalakshetra,Dr S Thaninleima of Khengjonglang(Manipur),Rojibita Gogoi of Jirsong Theatre(Assam),Bijoli Chakraborty of Jagitri Culture Society(Tripura),Toijam Shila of Prospective Repertory Theatre (Manipur),Kismat Bano of Wings Theatre(Assam),L Randhoni of PADA(Manipur) and others will attend the festival and present their plays.
Besides two prize winning ‘Folk theatres’ (or Shumang Leela) will also staged during the festival, the organizing committee chairperson added.
Many well known eminent women theatre personalities of the country such as Anuradha Kapoor and Kirti Jain both from New Delhi, Nilam Mansingh of Punjab along with Kago Mado of Arunachal Pradesh,Bharat Gupta of Delhi and Pabitra of Sikkim will also participate in the national seminar, Dr S Thaninleima, a National School of Drama graduate and a key functionary of the organizing committee said.
According to noted playwright Budha Chingtham who was also present during the press conference, first ever Nupi(or women) drama festival was held in 2015 in Manipur while the country’s first International women drama festival was held in 2003.
