CCSK commemorates the first session of the Manipur Legislative Council

In commemoration to the First session of the Manipur Legislative Council, Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) today observed the day as “Manipur gi Puwarida Meeyamgi Ahanba Leingak Leikhiba Numit” (The first day of peoples’ government in the history of Manipur) at GM Hall today.

In 1948, October 18 after the British Paramountcy left the erstwhile Kingdom on the midnight of August 14 , 1947, the first adult franchised of the government of Manipur was held during July of 1948 and the first sitting of the state Legislative Council was held on October 18 of 1948.

The commemoration function was attended by Dr. T. Lunkim, Chairman, The Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust, KS . Raihing, Headman, Wunghon Village, Ukhrul district, Abdul Hakim Shah, Asst. Professor , GP Women College, Filson Y. Lunghar , Social Activists  and Jeetendra Ningombam , president CCSK as presidium Members.

Manipur was the 2nd Asiatic Country to hold adult franchise to run democratic form of government and to have a constitution of its own. Philippine is the first country to hold adult franchise to form a peoples’ government.

Speakers on the occasion recalled the democratic characteristic of the Manipur Nation in 1948 before merger to the Indian Union. The Manipur government was abolished in October 15 , 1949 after the then King of Manipur, the Nominal head of the state was forced to signed the Controversial merger agreement with the dominion of India on September 21 , 1949.
