ICAR NEH Female farmers project launched to empower farm women through income generating agriculture

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Imphal West ICAR NEH Region today launched ICAR NEH Female farmers project to empower women farmers through income generating agriculture and allied activities at Khurkhul Awang Leikai Community Hall. 

Addressing the launching ceremony of the project Chief Guest of the function MLA of Sekmai Assembly Constituency and Deputy Chairman of Manipur State Planning Board Heikham Dingo said that the villagers should utilise different loans from the government to earn profit and maintain a comfortable livelihood with it. 

Highlighting the need to increase the economy of the state as it was presently dependent on the funds of the government he said that the economy of the state needs to boost. 

Claiming that the project will make a successful beginning specially for the women of Khurkhul he said that the villagers need to look for other alternative besides farming activities to generate more income. Paddy fields should also be used for planting different other crops and plants after harvesting paddy. 

Worrying about the changing climatic condition and its impact in the state Dingo urged the villagers to reduce deforestation and increase afforestation activities. 

Nodal Officer (TSP & SCSP), ICAR-RC NEHR Meghalaya Dr. S Hajarika said that the main aim of the project was to generate income to the poor women villagers and develop their skills to tackle the changing climatic scenario.

He further said that as a part of the project the farmers will be taught with different technologies to fight climate change along with generating their income.

Deputy General Manager of NABARD, Manipur stressed that the role of women in agriculture is not seen as much as it should be. He further said that they will plan to introduce a dairy farming project in the village to generate their incomes if the villagers were interested.

If the project ICAR- NEH Females Farmers project launched at Khurkhul is successful Managing Director of MSCB Limited said that they will impart the same training to various other different parts of the state. 

Talking about the experience and the benefits of Self Help Group Secretary of SHG of Khurkhul, Heikham Chanbi said that 10 SHGs were established in Khurkhul on 14 September 2017 and added that there were 18 Self Help Group presently working on their own products to support their family by generating income from it. 

She further said that their products were displayed in Sangai Festivals and even in festivals held at Kolkata. 

Chanbi further urged the need to have a community hall in the village for a large gathering.
