Round table discussion on ‘Conservation of Pony’ held

The Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University today organised a round table discussion on ‘Conservation of Pony’ at Anthropology Department, MU.

Speaking to media persons Vijaylakshmi Brara Associate Professor for Centre of Manipur Studies MU, she said that the plight of the indigenous pony is in grave danger. Many of the ponies died because of food poisoning, roads accidents and many other sickness and also then death rate of the ponies still increases.

She said that none of the policies drafted in the gazette notifications regarding the conservation of ponies are seen to be implemented at ground level. She also said that there is no proper breeding space and grazing ground for the ponies to be kept with care and protection.

She also appealed that the school curriculum needs to include the knowledge on Manipuri polo as well as the children to be sensitized towards the cultural heritage which the game entails which is a proud heritage.

And she finally concluded that there is an urgent need to protect and conserve the Manipuri Pony.

Members of MHRPA and AMPA along with the players and veterinaries from USA, Argentina Kenya, Canada  along with the Ambassador of Argentina as well as academicians from agriculture and animal husbandry and faculty and research scholars participated in the discussion.
