In a press meet organized jointly by Coalition against drug & Alcohol (CADA) and Nupi Samaj at CADA office Pureiromba khongnangkhong President of CADA Hijam Priyokumar said that the organization will not tolerate any policy for the manufacturing of liquor in the state.
He appealed the government to implement the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 effectively and to strengthen the act to seize and prohibit the consumption and production of liquor in the state.
He added that it was very unfortunate for the government by only seeing through the perspective of economy and neglecting from the perspective of health, social, cultural, Identity and society that they tried to implement a policy regarding the manufacturing of the liquor in the state for exporting by seeing only the profits of may be Rs 40-50 Crores.
He said that the liquor they plan to make is from the staple food of the state which is rice where the production and consumption differs a lot. With their planning for the production of liquor the state will surely bring an acute famine to the state, he added.
Priyokumar said that the conflicts and the chaos occurred in the state is mainly because of the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Around 80% of the total population of Manipur consumes alcohol. And the main factor for the domestic violence also is due to the consumption of liquor.
He claimed that the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 is just an ineffective act implemented due to the negligence of the part of the government. And assures that CADA and Nupi Samaj will assist the government in every way they can to prohibit the consumption and production of illicit drugs and alcohol.
