Incessant rainfall accompanied by severe cyclonic storm since yesterday has caused extensive flooding, traffic disruptions, and a mudslide across several districts, severely affecting daily life. Key roads and areas in Imphal East, Imphal West, Kangpokpi, and Senapati districts are underwater, causing chaos and inconvenience for residents.
The downpour has led to waterlogging and clogged drains in areas such as Andro parking, Checkon, Kakwa, Keishampat Tiddim Road, Uripok, Thangal Keithel, Wangkhei, etc. disrupting traffic movement.
A mudslide near Sinam village in Kangpokpi district resulted in a truck being swept into a gorge. Several other trucks are stranded as excavators work to clear the debris, officials confirmed.
In Senapati district, multiple rivers are overflowing, flooding several localities. The situation is worsened by swollen rivers in Imphal valley, including the Imphal River and the Nambul River, due to the relentless rain.
In Ukhrul district, Shirui is among the worst hit, with a landslide completely blocking NH 150 (Ukhrul-Jessami Road). Reports also indicate multiple landslides along the Ukhrul-Imphal road, stranding vehicles at several points, including Kazipphung. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has responded by deploying machinery to clear the debris.
“One gate of the Ethai Barrage has been opened by 30 cm. We are closely monitoring the situation, and any further openings will be coordinated with the Water Resources Department (WRD) and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). Our teams are working tirelessly around the clock to manage this situation and ensure public safety,” stated Chief Minister N Biren Singh on his X account.
According to the MET Centre in Imphal, significant rainfall was recorded between May 27 at 8:30 a.m. and May 28 at 8:30 a.m. The recorded rainfall amounts are as follows: Jiribam received 80.5 mm, Chandel 67 mm, Imphal Airport 54.5 mm, Churachandpur 35 mm, Bishnupur 75 mm, Ukhrul 92.2 mm, Tamenglong 10.2 mm, and Thoubal 68.3 mm.
