Imphal, April 12:
In yet another attempt to suppress the voice of the press, Chief Editor and Editor of Imphal Times have received a legal cum demand notice of Rs. 100 crore from the Managing Director of Manipur State Power Company Limited (MSPCL), following the publication of an investigative report that shed light on deep-rooted corruption within the department.
The report, published on March 29, 2025, under the title “MSPCL MD allegedly takes bribes from around 250 staffs in exchange for promotion and salary increment as a source”, revealed serious allegations of bribery, nepotism, and favoritism in the promotion process of MSPCL employees. According to credible sources and documentary evidence obtained by Imphal Times, a large number of staff members—estimated to be around 250—were either coerced into paying bribes or denied their rightful promotion and salary increments for refusing to do so.
“We stand by our news report. We have enough evidence,” said the Editor of Imphal Times. “This is not an isolated incident of misuse of power. We will continue our duty to report the truth, and no amount of legal intimidation will force us to retract our findings.”
Sources within the department have confirmed that staff promotions, which had already been approved through proper administrative channels, were withheld unless illegal monetary demands were fulfilled..
In addition to these revelations, Imphal Times is currently investigating reports of suspicious financial misappropriation during the tenure of MD Subachandra. Preliminary findings point toward the unauthorized siphoning of large sums of money under the guise of project expenses. A follow-up report on this matter is in preparation and will be published soon.
This is not the first time Imphal Times has faced legal threats for its investigative journalism. Despite repeated attempts to stifle press freedom, the publication has remained committed to exposing corruption and holding those in power accountable.
“We are not turning back. The people deserve to know the truth,” reaffirmed the Editor.
As this situation unfolds, the role of independent media in ensuring transparency and accountability in public institutions has once again come under the spotlight.
